Billing frequency and True-up period are two settings on a utility rate that affect how Aurora models a customer's bills. Billing frequency is how often the utility bills the homeowner, and the true-up period is how often excess energy is settled, in cash or credit. Set both to match the customer's utility.

Where to find these settings
Next to a rate, click View rate to open View pre-solar rate or View post-solar rate, and click Edit to change it. Billing frequency is on the Import rate tab. True-up period, True-up month, Net surplus compensation, and Compensation payment are on the Export rate tab.
For the steps and what each field means, see Editing utility rates on a project.
Billing frequency
Billing frequency is how often the utility bills the homeowner: Annual or Monthly. It's separate from the true-up period, so a rate can have Monthly billing with an Annual true-up period, for example.
True-up period and true-up month
True-up period is how often the utility settles excess energy: Annual or Monthly. At each true-up, the customer receives the Net surplus compensation rate for any excess generation that's left, as cash or credit, depending on Compensation payment.
True-up month is the month the true-up happens. It changes the customer's bills and savings, so set it to the month the customer's utility uses.
Key considerations
- When you edit a post-solar rate, Aurora shows this warning: Post-solar rate edits will apply to all new designs.
- Compensation policy, in Design Mode, sets how the utility pays for exports. For its options, see Editing utility rates on a project.
- Net surplus compensation and Compensation payment matter only when excess generation is left at the true-up.
