In certain regions, Aurora offers consumption profile templates that are based on actual homeowners or energy models of individual households. These patterns offer a convenient method to estimate homeowner consumption without interval billing data, and may fit client behavior better than generic modeled profiles.
The profiles provide default seasonality and consumption values that change on a daily basis. Seasonality will follow the provided data if only one month of energy usage or utility bill is entered, but will be adjusted to match the provided data if additional energy or bills are entered.
Unlike consumption profiles based on energy models, lifestyle patterns do not have appliance-level breakdowns because only the meter-level data is available. Users may add pools or EVs as add-on products to a profile shape, but other levers are not available.
Methodology
After identifying data sources, Aurora collects hourly load profiles representing consumption from one year. The consumption data is normalized, and clustered using K-means clustering or hierarchical clustering to group the profiles into similar patterns - for example, consumers who both draw a lot of energy during the day are likely to get classified into the same group. Upon the completion of clustering, groups with a small sample size are discarded, since the profile could represent an individual. Each cluster’s mean consumption is taken as the profile shape.
